S/V Brighter Days is a 1975 Fuji 45′ Center Cockpit Ketch. She was designed by John Alden and built in the Fuji Boat Yards in Japan. There are approximately 28 built. Brighter Days is Hull #8. She was purchased by us in July 2016, almost 3 years to the date that we had purchased our first sailboat.
She was previously known as Ahea Kali, and as Kuuipo. We hope she doesn’t mind that we didn’t stay with the Hawaiian theme. Rather, we picked something meaningful to us. The song Brighter Days, written and recorded by JJ Grey, is a song about home, about having to leave that home, and about no matter where you may go, still loving life in the South. This fits Travis and myself perfectly.
Brighter Days measures 45′ feet on deck, 52′ overall with customized dinghy davits and a long bowsprit. She has a beam of 12.67, a draft of 5 1/2 feet, and displaces 30,500 pounds. She carries 250 gallons of water, 140 gallons of fuel, and has a 76 hp Yanmar engine.
She was refit by a previous owner, who turned her into a work of art. We love her, feel grateful to have her in our lives, and are looking forward to spending the next several years with her.
